About This Project

Since 1857, The Hastings Star Gazette has been the community news and shopping source for Hastings-area residents. The Star Gazette serves the public through its Thursday weekly newspaper, its continuously updated website, its Sunday shopper called the Trade Winds, numerous supplements, special sections and annual community guide.

The newspaper has earned many awards from the Minnesota Newspaper Association over the years, including 2014 awards for General Excellence, Best Use of Photography and Typography and Design.

The Star Gazette has also received a Distinguished Service Award from Special Olympics Minnesota and the Minnesota VFW Ed A. Callahan News Media Award.

Hastings is a popular day-trip tourist destination for Twin Cities residents. Along with the Mississippi River, day-trippers enjoy Vermillion Falls and Lake Rebecca; the historic downtown business district along the riverfront and some 20 miles of bike trails. Local residents value its quality school district, Regina Medical Center, Smead Manufacturing, county government center and historic City Hall.

Popular activities here include boating and fishing on the Mississippi River, swimming at the Hastings Family Aquatic Center, hockey and indoor soccer at the Civic Arena, several outdoor hockey and ice rinks, 30 parks, nearby public golf courses, canoeing on the Vermillion River. Also, Welch Village ski resort is 15 miles south of Hastings and Afton Alps ski resort is about 15 miles north of Hastings.
Hastings was known for its famous Spiral Bridge over the Mississippi River, which was built in the late 1800s and was demolished in 1951. The newest bridge, a four-lane feat of engineering, was opened to traffic in 2013.
